Maine Woman Charged With Stealing $8,000 From One Fund
BOSTON (CBS) – A Maine woman has been charged with stealing $8,000 from One Fund Boston and attempting to collect another $12,500 from it, investigators say.
Amy Molloy, 49, of Portland, Maine, was arrested in Portland Wednesday morning, Attorney General Martha Coakley's Office announced.
She was charged with larceny over $250 and attempted larceny.
Coakley said Molloy claimed she had foot and hip surgery due to an injury she suffered at the Boston Marathon bombing.
"She allegedly stole money from the thousands of people who had so generously donated to help the real victims of the Marathon bombing," Coakley said.
The investigation started in August 2013 after officials received a notarized claim from Molloy which included several medical documents related to her foot surgery.
The One Fund issued an $8,000 payment in July 2013 and in June 2014, announced that it would make a second round of payments to victims.
The following month Molloy submitted a second claim for $12,500 related to hip surgery she underwent in Maine in August 2013; however, no payment was made.
Investigators discovered portions of the medical records attached to Molloy's first and second claims were not authentic and that she didn't receive treatment for bombing-related injuries.
