Magic GM Rob Hennigan On Toucher & Rich: 'Celtics Have A Bright Future'

BOSTON (CBS) - Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigan joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Monday to preview his team's game against the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden.

The 32-year-old Worcester native became the youngest general manager in the NBA when he signed on to take the Orlando job in 2012 at age 30. Hennigan credits his success to "timing and a lot of luck" on how he climbed the league's front office ladder so fast. He also said his time spent as an intern under legendary coach Gregg Popovich in San Antonio helped a bit.

But before getting into tonight's game, Hennigan talked about the challenges and media scrutiny his team faced from the Dwight Howard trade and fallout two years ago.

"At times it was stressful," said Hennigan, who went on to say that the mindset, tone and energy of his staff has remained "pretty much the same" since he's been there.

Ainge: Fans 'Not Paying Attention' If You Think We're Tanking

As a general manager of a team also in rebuild mode, Hennigan offered his thoughts on the new-look Celtics, first year coach Brad Stevens and the job of Danny Ainge.

"Clearly they're starting with a blank canvas," said Hennigan on the Celtics rebuild. "Danny Ainge does a great job and he knows what he's doing. The creativity they've shown over the years bodes well for what will unfold in the future."

"Brad Stevens is a heck of a coach. Really smart guy, really knows what he's doing. If I was a betting man, I'd say the Celtics have a bright future."

Fred also wanted to get Hennigan's thoughts on NCAA basketball, and whether or not NBA teams "punish" kids who stay in college all four years. Lastly, we got a status update of Glen "Big Baby" Davis' rap career.
