Lunenburg Rallying Around Football Team After Thanksgiving Game Canceled
LUNENBURG (CBS) --- People in Lunenburg are starting to rally around the football team after its season came to an early end.
On Tuesday, the superintendent decided to forfeit the Thanksgiving Day game because of questions about racism against one of the players and some opponents.
It all started last weekend when someone allegedly spray painted a racial slur on the home of Isaac Phillips.
Phillips mother is white and his father is black.
School officials hoped someone would come forward with information about who spray painted the home. So far, there haven't been any answers.
Now, players and their families say it's not fair to penalize the whole Lunenburg team and another team. Residents of Lunenburg came out in force at a meeting Wednesday night, trying to convince the school committee to bring back their popular Thanksgiving football game.
"Being the father of a senior player this is the last game he'll ever play," Lez Szabady said. "We don't have a guilty party so we're lashing out."
The parents say they don't agree with what happened but they say the punishment is unfair. The victim's family says they feel like people blame them for the canceled game even though they never asked for it.
In the end, the school committee opted not to take a vote on the Thanksgiving game, meaning the decision to cancel it stands.
