Lucky Fan Drinks From Stanley Cup With Bruins Players

BOSTON (CBS) - One fan found himself drinking from the Stanley Cup with some of the Bruins Friday night.

Most fans don't get a chance to even see the cup in person, never mind get a chance to touch it. A fan drinking from the cup is unheard of.

"I haven't been able to sleep since," said John Sacco, a self-described sports nut from South Boston.

How did Sacco get his chance to take a sip from the cup?

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports.

"And I get to the back room, and the first thing I see is the Stanley Cup," said Sacco.

A friend tipped Sacco off that the Bruins and the cup were at Stella's Restaurant in the South End. Sacco went down there and got to kiss the cup.

Then, the Bruins started drinking from it, and Sacco got in line, but the final decision rested with Shawn Thornton.

"It was just me, two feet away from the cup... I started sweating, I didn't feel right. I looked at Thornton in his eyes, and he's looking back at me, and I just kinda shrugged at him, and I said, 'What do you want me to do? You know I'm not on the team. Ok? You want me to move left?' He said, 'Come get it,'" said Sacco.

Seconds later, Sacco took a sweet drink from Lord Stanley's mug.

"I close my eyes, and the next thing I know, I'm feeling the cup touch my lips, and the drink in my mouth and I can't explain to you the feeling from that moment on," said Sacco. "I still feel like I'm in a dream."

Now, Sacco has the sports memory of a lifetime.

"I drank from something that Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, and many more great players drank from, and it's an honor that I just can't wait to show my kids and my grandkids," said Sacco.
