Lowell's Only Detox Facility Shutting Down
LOWELL (AP) - Lowell is losing its only inpatient drug and alcohol detoxification facility, meaning addicts will have to travel farther for help and about 50 people will lose their jobs.
The Lowell Community Health Center is closing its detox facility located on the Tewksbury Hospital campus on Dec. 29, primarily because of financial problems.
The 24-bed facility that serves about 160 patients per month has been losing money for years.
Center Chief Executive Dorcas Grigg-Saito tells The Sun of Lowell that the facility is important because some addicts can't get clean on an outpatient basis. She says the center's clients will now be bused to Boston, Worcester and Danvers.
