Lowell Man Arrested In Fatal Stabbing Of Shelter Worker

LOWELL (CBS) — A 19-year-old man staying at the Lowell Transitional Living Center on Middlesex Street in Lowell is charged with stabbing a shelter worker to death on Saturday.

Pericles Clergeau is charged with murdering Jose Roldan, 34, of Lowell. Clergeau's charges were upgraded from assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The stabbing happened at approximately 10 a.m. Saturday. The victim's brother, Miguel Cuba, said Roldan was trying to intervene in a fight involving Clergeau.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

When police arrived at the center they found both men, and they said Cleargeau was still armed with the knife. They were able to recover the knife without incident. Roldan was airlifted to Brigham and Woman's Hospital, where he died.

Cuba claims Clergeau had been kicked out of the shelter, but was let back in.

"It's not right. I don't know how they can let that happen. He had previous problems with my brother," said Cuba. "They sent him back. They didn't check him. They didn't frisk him."

Cuba said the victim had lived at the shelter for several years, and got a job there as a way to give back and help others the way he had been helped.

Clergeau is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
