Lowell Police Officer Shoots Driver Of Stolen Truck

LOWELL (CBS) – A Lowell man was arrested and hospitalized after he allegedly rammed a police cruiser with a stolen truck and was shot by an officer before running from the scene.

Lowell police said Christopher Bischoff, 32, was driving a stolen truck with a sander attachment on Sheldon Street Friday night just before 7:30 p.m. when an officer tried to pull the vehicle over.

In what police called "an attempt to evade capture," Bischoff then allegedly put the truck in reverse and rammed into the front of the officer's cruiser. The police cruiser was disabled as a result of the collision.

The officer, who Lowell police said was "fearing for his life,"  fired several shots at Bischoff. The man was able to run from the scene, but was arrested by officers a short distance away.

Bischoff was transported to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life threatening gunshot wounds. He was transferred to a Boston hospital in police custody.

Lowell police said the officer involved in the shooting was also hospitalized, but has since been released.
