Marathon Bombing Survivor Starts College On Scholarship From Lowell Company
BOSTON (CBS) --- Boston Marathon bombing survivor Sydney Corcoran walks onto the Merrimack College campus with a great sense of accomplishment.
The 18-year-old takes some mighty big steps as she begins her college career.
"I had so much trouble walking but now I am just amazed I am here and able to walk to class. I feel triumph," Sydney said.
Sydney and her mother Celeste were badly injured in the bombings. Her mother lost both of her legs, and Sydney severely injured her foot.
"I can't move my last two toes and I have trouble moving my foot. It's been a tough summer because I have had many procedures done," Sydney said.
Her goal in college is to study psychology and has dreams of becoming an occupational therapist.
Sydney was also fortunate enough to receive a full four-year college scholarship to Merrimack thanks to Lowell based company Macom Solutions Technology.
"When we heard about the tragedy we heard some local Lowell folks were impacted and we just thought there is no way we could not help. She is superb and the entire family is an inspiration," Macom CEO John Croteau said.
Sydney says she is nervous about her first day and does not want to be late to class.
"I am so honored for the scholarship. I want to get straight A's. I don't want to let them down," Sydney said.
