Lookout Driver Pleads Guilty To 2nd-Degree Murder In Woburn Officer's Killing
WOBURN (CBS) -- The lookout driver in a 2010 jewelry robbery during which a Woburn police officer was fatally shot pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Wednesday.
Officer John "Jack" Maguire, a father of three and 34-year veteran of the force, was responding to a jewelry burglary at Kohl's in Woburn on the day after Christmas when he was shot and killed by convicted felon Dominic Cinelli.
Maguire's brother and Woburn police officers filled the courtroom as Scott Hanright, who was originally charged with first-degree murder, changed his plea. He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.
Hanright, now 23, pleaded guilty to all 22 counts in his indictment, the most serious being second-degree murder. He told a judge that he has suffered from PTSD since 2007.
Maguire was the first Woburn police officer to be killed in the line of duty.
Cinelli had been serving three life sentences for violent crimes before he was released on parole and killed Maguire. The murder led to an overhaul of the state's parole board.
Middlesex District Attorney read a victim impact statement from Maguire's widow, who said "anger and sorrow" set in after the murder.
"I can be in a crowded room and still feel alone," Desiree Maguire said. "Jack was a good man, a caring and loving husband and father, a real friend and an outstanding police officer. He will never be forgotten."
Woburn Police Chief Robert Ferullo broke down in tears as he talked about the loss of the veteran officer.
"I sincerely hope that the resolution to this portion of the criminal case will minimize the additional pain for Jack's family," he said.
