Longfellow Bridge Construction Project Traffic Woes Begin
BOSTON (CBS) -- Motorists trying to cross the Charles River to Cambridge on Sunday got a taste of traffic headaches to come ... for the next three years.
Boston Police began detouring traffic away from the 97-year-old Longfellow Bridge on Sunday, the first major traffic disruption expected while the span connecting Boston and Cambridge is renovated over the next three-and-a-half years.
Beginning Sunday, only one lane of vehicle traffic will be open on the bridge, allowing travel from Cambridge into Boston. Instead of using the bridge to travel from Boston to Cambridge, motorists will be detoured eastbound on Storrow Drive to the O'Brien Highway and the Museum of Science, then redirected to Land Boulevard.
For Monday's busy commute, Boston Police plan to have officer details stationed at most corners near the bridge and along the detour route.

The rehab project is designed to repair and rehabilitate the bridge, which was opened in 1906, without reworking the span's historical look.
