Lockdown Ordered At NH Jail After Inmate Rebellion

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Inmates at New Hampshire's Merrimack County jail are on lockdown after a rebellion prompted by an instruction to clean their unit.

Instead of cleaning, 12 to 14 inmates rained paper and other items for the jail's second level and barricaded a stairway with items taken from their cells. They also destroyed televisions in the day room.

Corrections officers were ordered out of the maximum-security Delta unit for their own safety and emergency response teams were mobilized.

A jail spokesman says no injuries are reported and inmates are believed to have obeyed the order to return to their cells.

A maximum of 18 inmates are allowed out of their cells at any given time.

The spokesman says it's only the second incident of its kind in five years.
