Local School Districts Running Out Of Snow Days
BOSTON (CBS) - The kids love all these snow days, but administrators say there may be a hefty price.
According to Massachusetts state law, students must have classes 180 days per year. The problem is schools can not be in session in July.
The Boston Public School Superintendent is considering some extreme options, if the district runs out of days on the calendar. As of Jan. 31, Boston only has three possible snow days left, with several significant storms in the forecast.
WBZ-TV's Christina Hager reports.
"We are not afraid of calling school off. Our main focus is safety," says spokesperson Matt Wilder.
If Boston runs out of days, he says the Superintendent will consider classes on Evacuation Day, Bunker Hill Day, or Memorial Day. She's also considering classes during February or April vacations, or on Saturdays. Another option is extending the length of the remaining school days.
"We want to be considerate of families who've maybe already arranged travel for those school vacation times, but we also need to meet that 180-day requirement," says Wilder.
