NFL Draft Day 2 Live Blog: Patriots Trade Out Of Third Round
BOSTON (CBS) -- Follow along for everything the New England Patriots do during the second and third round of the NFL Draft.

10:59 p.m: It's what we've been waiting for out of the Patriots the last two days. They have finally made a trade.
The Pats traded out of the third round, sending the 93rd pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars. With that selection, the Jags picked Brandon Linder out of Miami.
In exchange the Patriots receive picks number 105 (fifth overall in the fourth round) and 179 (third overall in the sixth round). They now have three picks in both the fourth and sixth rounds.
They grab more picks for tomorrow with the move, so we'll see if they fill out those holes that remained after their second round pick. They now have seven selections to make on Saturday, unless of course they trade those off for picks in next year's draft. You just never know.

9:50 p.m.: The second round is over, so now let's take a look at the Patriots track record in the third round.
If New England's success in the second round is considered a mixed bag, I have no clue what to call what they've done in the third. It's been un-impressive to say the least.
The verdict is still out on the two Rutgers players they drafted last year, Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon, and they did get Stevan Ridley in the third round in 2011. Backup QB Ryan Mallett was also a third round pick in 2011, but hasn't been too impressive in his brief time on the field.
After that, it gets kind of scary. In 2010, the Patriots drafted receiver Taylor Price in the third round. He played just four games over two years in New England, catching just three passes for 41 yards.
They also struck out on another wide out in 2009, drafting Ben Tate in the third round. Linebacker Tyrone McKenzie was also taken in the third round of that draft, another bust for the Patriots.
Quarterback Kevin O'Connell was also a third round pick by the Patriots in 2008.
As for their history with the 93rd pick, New England has selected in that spot just once, back in 1992 when they used the pick on Toledo defensive back Darren Anderson. He played just one game in New England, but enjoyed a seven-year NFL career.
9:35 p.m.: CBS Sports' Pete Prisco loved the Patriots selection of Dominque Easley in the first round, giving it an A on his first round report card.
He isn't as big a fan of the Garoppolo pick though, giving it a C-:
"This is a weird choice. They have Ryan Mallett and Tom Brady has some good years left. Plus, I think this is high for him."
9:15 p.m.: Schefter knew. As did the Felger & Mazz big board.
With the 62nd pick, the Patriots selected Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who threw for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns in 2013. It's the highest they've drafted a quarterback since they took Drew Bledsoe first overall in 1993.

STRENGTHS: Good, not great, height, body type and hand size. Better than adequate arm strength with a snap release that produces some juice. Live arm with his experience coming from a pass-happy offense.
Excellent passing vision with quick eyes to scan and a quick, natural delivery. Smart and executes the offense well. Quick intellectual process on the football field. Above average timing with little unnecessary movements and very good pace in his set-up.
Quick feet to evade pressure with the pocket mobility to move his lower body with his eyes focused downfield. Gets "happy feet" at times, but shows the ability to reset. Very good touch and overall placement with improved accuracy to all levels of the field throughout his career.
Level-headed and always under control with a strong leadership presence. Confident thrower and short memory. Elite career production as a four-year starter at the FCS level.
WEAKNESSES: Lack of elite velocity will show on some NFL throws. Needs to continue to improve his decision-making and not allow pressure to severely alter his process. Bad habit of forcing throws in small windows. Lower-than-ideal release point with an almost side-arm motion.
Needs to get his feet under control on a consistent basis and regularly step into his throws. Must continue and develop his pocket awareness and internal clock to feel pressure. Holds the ball too long at times and will take unnecessary hits.
Experience is in a FCS spread, shotgun attack; needs to become more acclimated with under-center snaps.
He won't be taking over for Tom Brady anytime soon (knock on wood), but he's now the quarterback of the future for New England. We'll see what that means for Ryan Mallett...
It's an interesting pick, as the Patriots didn't need to draft another quarterback. They have other needs on the roster now at tight end, offensive line and safety, and Garoppolo isn't going to make an impact on Sunday's anytime soon.
But, there is a silver lining:
9:12 p.m.: We're just a few picks away from the Patriots' selection, and Adam Schefter just dropped this one Twitter:
9:00 p.m.: Peyton Manning just got another solid weapon to work with, as the Denver Broncos traded up with the San Francisco 49ers to draft Cody Latimer with the 56th pick.
Latimer, who will take over for Erik Decker, had 135 receptions for over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns in his three years at Indiana, and reportedly only dropped one pass last season.
Latimer is the 10th wide receiver taken in the draft so far.
8:54 p.m.: And there goes another running back, as the Bengals select Jeremy Hill out of LSU.
There's a good chance we see the Patriots draft a running back or tight end with the 62nd pick.
8:46 p.m.: A running back has finally been drafted in 2014!
The Tennessee Titans, who moved on from Chris Johnson in the offseason, selected Bishop Sankey out of Washington. This is the latest the first running back has been drafted in NFL Draft history.
Sankey ran for a school record 1,870 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2013.
8:40 p.m.: Another tight end just went off the board, as the Cardinals selected Troy Niklas out of Notre Dame with the 52nd pick.
The Patriots could use another tight end with Rob Gronkowski recovering from that devastating leg injury and Michael Hoomanawanui the only other tight end on the roster. We'll see if that's the direction they go when their spot comes up shortly.
8:28 p.m.: Former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington just announced New York's pick at 49th, and it was a guy many Patriots' fans were hoping would end up in New England.
The Jets took tight end Jace Amaro out of Texas Tech. The 6-5 Amaro caught 13 touchdowns in his three years at Texas Tech, and set a college football record for tight ends with 1,352 receiving yards in 2013.
Amaro would have been a great depth pick for the Patriots, but now he's on the Jets. New York isn't playing around this draft.
8:18 p.m.: Defensive end Stephon Tuitt out of Notre Dame, who many thought the Patriots would pick on Thursday night, is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who drafted him with the 46th overall pick.
Luckily, the Patriots won't have to deal with him and the rest of the Pittsburgh pass-rush this year.
8:00 p.m.: It's been pretty quiet from a Patriots' standpoint in the second round, so we'll take a quick look back on their first round pick of Dominique Easley.
The Boston Globe's Ben Volin, who predicted the Patriots would draft Easley in the first round, joined The Adam Jones Show earlier to analyze the pick. Volin said Easley is a Warren Sapp-style pass-rusher than can be disruptive from pretty much anywhere, but his injury history is a definite cause for concern.
"He's a risk, no doubt about it. He always seems to be banged up, and he only had 5 ½ sacks," said Volin. "But he's very disruptive and gives them a very good interior pass-rush, which is something they've lacked the past few years. What he does early in the season is still to be determined because he's coming off that ACL surgery, but just tremendous upside for a kid who if he was healthy, probably would be sitting there at 29."
Volin thinks Easley will start training camp on the PUP list, and it's possible he's still on the list at the start of the regular season.
6:52 p.m.: We have plenty of time before the Patriots pick, so how about a little history lesson.
The second round has been a bit of a mixed bag for the Patriots under Bill Belichick. While they've hit on players like Rob Gronkowski (2010), Deion Branch (2002) and Matt Light (2001), there are plenty of misses. Those include Chad Jackson (2006), Terrence Wheatley (2008), Ron Brace and Darius Butler (2009) and Ras-I Dowling (2011).
New England has picked at 62nd twice before in the draft, selecting linebacker Brandon Spikes in 2010 and corner Terrence Wheatley in 2008. They also had the 62nd pick in 2012, but sent it to the Packers for a third and sixth round pick in that year's draft.
5:52 p.m.: After what was likely a long night on Thursday, the Patriots are gearing up for another on Friday with rounds two and three of the NFL Draft on tap.
The Patriots have two selections on Day 2: No. 62 in the second round and No. 93 in the third round.
After selecting defensive lineman Dominique Easley with the 29th overall pick on Thursday night, head coach Bill Belichick said he and his staff would reload in the morning, re-evaluate their big board and see where things fall on Day 2.
With Easley providing some youth and depth on the defensive line the Patriots can now focus on other areas of need, such as depth on the offensive line, tight end, running back, safety and linebacker. There's also always the chance they trade back and grab a few extra selections for either Friday night or Saturday's rounds 4-7.
There was a rumored Ryan Mallett trade to the Texans on Thursday, which would have netted the Patriots a third-round pick from the Houston, so we'll see if that surfaces again at some point on Friday. But Belichick wasn't very pleased when asked about the rumored deal on Thursday night, and others around the league have said that there were no talks between the two teams. The Texans can put those rumors to rest if they select a quarterback early Friday.
If the Patriots do trade Mallett, it would create a need on the depth chart behind Tom Brady. The Patriots looked at quarterbacks leading up to the draft, and it's a direction they could go in either of the rounds on Friday night. A few names that could be available are Pittsburgh's Tom Savage and Eastern Illninois' Jimmy Garoppolo.
What we do know is that 68 more selections will be made tonight (32 in the second round, 36 in the third) starting at 7pm, and each team will have seven minutes in the second round and five minutes in the third round to make those picks.
