Leominster Man Held On $15,000 Bail In Hit And Run

LEOMINSTER (CBS) - A Leominster man charged in a hit and run that left a teen with two broken legs was ordered held on $15,000 bail Monday.

Daniel Brand, 34, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday in Leominster District Court to charges of leaving the scene of an accident and intimidating a witness.

Police say Brand hit 16-year-old Joshua Carillo as the teen rode his bike on Route 12 May 5.

Instead of stopping to help Carillo, investigators say Brand drove for about a mile with the bike pinned underneath his car.

A witness told officers she saw Brand getting rid of the mangled bike and that Brand threatened her later.

"I have spoken to him and his wife. They both maintain he is not the perpetrator," said Brand's attorney, Ellen O'Connor.

O'Connor said Brand takes care of his three children because he has been unable to work due to a broken back he suffered in a car accident when he was 20.

"He's upset, he's scared, he's not sure why he's been charged," O'Connor said.

Prosecutors said Brand has a criminal record that covers nearly two pages.

O'Connor noted that it's unlikely Brand will be able to come up with the $15,000 for bail.

He is due back in court June 11.
