Lawyers Not Saying Whether Cahill May Face Second Trial
BOSTON (AP) — Prosecutors and lawyers for former Massachusetts Treasurer Tim Cahill have declined to say whether Cahill will be tried for a second time on corruption charges following a brief court hearing.
The hearing Friday came three weeks after jurors in Cahill's trial failed to reach a verdict on charges accusing him of scheming to run $1.5 million in taxpayer-funded lottery ads to help his unsuccessful 2010 gubernatorial campaign.
Judge Christine Roach spoke to lawyers and prosecutors at sidebar, so spectators in the courtroom could not hear what was said. The judge scheduled another status conference for Jan. 25.
Cahill's lawyer declined to comment when asked if Cahill is facing a second trial.
State Attorney General Martha Coakley has not said whether her office plans to re-try Cahill. His former campaign manager was acquitted by the same jury.
