KG Still A Huge Gino Fan, But Doesn't Enjoy 'Gino Time' As A Net
BOSTON (CBS) -- During his six years in Boston, Kevin Garnett loved the team's video victory cigar.
As a visitor? Well that's a different story.
With numerous lopsided victories during Garnett's time in Boston, it was common practice for the Celtics to play a famous "American Bandstand" clip to signal the W was in hand. The video, which features The Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing," is well known among Celtics faithful thanks to a smooth bearded gentleman getting his groove on with a Gino Vannelli T-shirt. It reached such cult status that the Celtics started to call it "Gino Time."
And Garnett couldn't get enough Gino time during his days in green. But now that he's wearing a Brooklyn Nets uniform, and Gino was dancing for what ended up being a 121-105 victory for Boston, Garnett wasn't as invested on Wednesday night.
"Listen, I was so upset I didn't even get the really deep Gino in my system," Garnett said after the game. "My low moment for the night, you know what I mean? Gino is a big part of me and I didn't even get to celebrate it. I'm still a huge Gino fan."
The outcome wasn't what he wanted, and his disco dancing friend didn't have the same feel to it, but for Garnett, Wednesday's season opener took place in his home away from home.
"It'€™s always special to come back to Beantown," he said. "Hearing the little things, it'€™s very hard to focus. I had to go to yoga this morning, get my meditation right and stay level. A lot of energy in the building. It'€™s always great to come back here. I love Beantown. I'€™m always bleeding green."
Garnett received a huge ovation from Celtics fans when introduced and again he did his pregame ritual ahead of the opening tip. That changed late in the game though, when Garnett got into a brief dust up with Kelly Olynyk and was assessed a technical foul.
He made his way to the bench, and shortly after, Gino made his first of hopefully many appearances of the new Celtics season.
If they play the way they did on Wednesday night, Garnett thinks there will be plenty of "Gino Time" at the Garden.
"Their schemes were very clever," Garnett said of head coach Brad Stevens' gameplan. "They do unorthodox things such as putting a big in the corner, having the big roll -- that's a lot of pressure on your small [men]. My hat goes off to coach Stevens and his schemes. They played well."
