Toucher & Rich: Why Did Wideman Get Such A Big Contract?
Ryan Kennedy from The Hockey News joined Toucher & Rich to discuss Adam Oates getting voted into the Hall of Fame, the contract Dennis Wideman got from the Calgary Flames and new goalie Malcolm Subban.
Former Bruins Adam Oates was voted into the NHL Hall of Fame the other day along with Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin and Pavel Bure. Some were quick to point out that Brendan Shanahan didn't get in.
"The easiest explanation is that Mats Sundin got his spot and the way to look at it is the Hall of Fame, it is a committee of 18 people and quite a few luminaries on that list."
They moved on to discuss Dennis Wideman getting a 5 year/$26 million contract from the Calgary Flames. Why pay so much for a guy like Wideman?
"It's a little steep for me, for a team that already employs Jay Bouwmeester. Sometimes with Calgary, you look at their draft this weekend and you say hey they had a pretty solid draft and then they go and sign Wideman to that amount of dollars. I think what you're seeing here is free agency is coming up here July 1st, players always get over paid and Wideman's essentially a free agent the Flames just got to him early because they traded for his rights."
The guys went on to talk about the NHL draft and the Bruins getting goalie Malcolm Subban in the first round. He's still young and is probably a few years away from playing net in a NHL game, but what can he bring to this team in time?
