Keller @ Large: Who Are These Sociopaths?
BOSTON (CBS) - It never ranks very high on the list of top issues the public is focused on. But somehow I think those polls don't adequately measure how concerned people are with violent crime.
Even though the odds against you or me ever being victimized by it are very long, the sight of Aaron Hernandez, a man who had everything – money, fame, health, a beautiful fiancée and baby – throwing it away to satisfy his inexplicable blood-lust, is enough to make you wary.
Whatever his problems in life – the loss of his father at age 16, the problems with the law that followed – there was no provocation in the murder of Odin Lloyd that might have made the crime, while still unforgiveable, somehow comprehensible.
Is there really so much difference between convicted killers Aaron Hernandez and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev?
The Marathon killer didn't have millions, but he had everything he needed, plenty of support from the taxpayers, not to mention his drug-peddling business.
Yet he chose to kill innocent people as well, and, like Hernandez, has yet to show an iota of remorse.
Who are these sociopaths?
Where do they come from?
And how many more of them are there among us?
It's especially scary to realize that we knew something wasn't right with both of these murderers. The Tsarnaev brothers had warning signs flashing all over them. And Hernandez had demonstrated a hot temper and a willingness to shoot a friend years ago.
I'll leave to smarter folks the actual brainstorming about what if anything can be done to better identify sociopaths and keep them from killing.
But it's worrisome, even if it doesn't match concern over jobs or the budget in the polls.
