Keller @ Large: What Did We Do To Deserve This?

BOSTON (CBS) - As you know, I hate to be the voice of doom and negativity. But the dominant news story of the day is bad news, very bad news, unbelievably horrible terrible news.

Listen to Jon's commentary:

Podcast

The possible government shutdown? The war in Libya not going so well? Donald Trump surging in the polls?

No, all those stories are awful, no question, but - are you kidding me?

The bad news is that we Red Sox fans are being punished, severely, and I cannot figure out why.

That first series in Texas, OK, they are the defending AL Champions, and we always have trouble in Texas. It's just so... big.

But dropping the first two in Cleveland in embarrassing fashion?

Let's hope our starting pitchers are never stopped for speeding and asked to show their drivers license, because judging from their initial performances, they couldn't get their wallets out.

And the most fearsome lineup ever assembled seems surprised that they don't get to hit off tees.

This is bad, really bad. And here come the Yankees this weekend.

So I'm wondering - what did we do to deserve this?

Are the baseball gods Republicans, punishing us for voting in every can of corn with a "D" next to its name in last fall's election?

Did we shear off His mailbox and demolish His stone wall with our snowplows last winter?

Is this some kind of bizarre, delayed payback for winning it all in '04 and '07?

I can't imagine the crime we committed that this punishment is supposed to fit.

We wait all winter for the baseball season, and this year is was an especially grueling wait. We got ourselves all whipped up with anticipation after the big free-agent signings. Everybody's healthy for once. And this is what we get?

Has any team ever gone 0-and-162?

Is it possible to be mathematically eliminated before the home opener? Am I starting to sound hysterical?

Please, baseball gods: whatever we did, we're really, really sorry.
