Keller @ Large: Stop The Toxic Nonsense
BOSTON (CBS) - I was in New York City Thursday, generally a noticeably stressful place. But it was Minnesota-Nice down there compared with the way some of us are starting to treat other up here under the stress of our snowpocalypse nightmare.
I noticed Mayor Walsh pleading for people to be more patient and kind to each other in his snowpocalypse briefing the other day, and it was nice to hear a politician sincerely trying to promote humane behavior. You don't see as much of that as you might like.
The latest example is truly dumb comments made by a usually-smart man, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who said this week he doesn't believe President Obama "loves America" because he"doesn't express a great love of this country" and criticizes the U.S. in public at times.
"President Obama was brought up in an atmosphere in which he was taught to be a critic of America," concluded Giuliani.
First of all, Giuliani appears to know nothing of the people who brought up Mr. Obama. His mother was an anthropologist, his grandmother a bank official who read to her grandson from the Declaration of Independence, and his grandfather was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Apologies are due to the memories of all three.
Secondly, while the president's policies are subject to debate, there isn't a shred of evidence that he loves America any less than Rudy Giuliani.
There was no reason for Guiliani to go there.
Tomorrow, it'll be some Democrat unfairly disparaging some Republican's motives. That's what we do to each other these days.
And while we have to wait for spring to make snowpocalypse go away, there's no reason we have to put up with that other toxic nonsense.
