Keller @ Large: Scott Brown's New 'Townie' Ad
BOSTON (CBS) - In the Massachusetts Senate race, incumbent Scott Brown launched a new ad that plays up his image as a man of the people.
Brown's latest ad is shot in a diner, one of his preferred settings. "It's a local spot in Wrentham, right down the street from my house," says Senator Brown. And the image of Brown as a familiar townie, morning coffee in hand, is in calculated contrast with his likely opponent, Elizabeth Warren.
"You know, my favorite breakfast place is at home, I eat at home," Warren told Jon Keller.
"I'm not really focusing on what she isn't," says Brown. "I'm focusing on who I am and what I've done."
"I'm from here, my kids were born here, I was married here, I'll probably die here, not too soon I hope," says Brown. "I think it matters because I lived and breathed Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, and I care very deeply about where our state's going."
But while Brown may trump her 20 years of local residency, Warren says the issue isn't who's a bigger townie, but who'll do more to stick up for local interests.
"It's been about Wall Street and helping Wall Street out," says Warren. "That's the part of America that Scott Brown has really been taking money from, developing a close personal relationship with."
In her current TV ad, Warren fights back with a diner stop of her own and testimonials from regular folks with Boston accents, a sign of concern over Brown's effort to define this self-styled outsider as the wrong kind of outsider.
