Keller @ Large: One-On-One With Mayor Menino
BOSTON (CBS) – Mayor Tom Menino may not be able to pronounce the names of local sports stars, but he is a master in the art of politics. That was evident when WBZ's Jon Keller sat down with him for a one-on-one interview.
Despite his recent hospitalization, Menino has not ruled out running for a sixth term.
"No my appetite is not less, it's just that I can't raise money from a hospital bed," Menino said. "I was in the hospital from October to January so I wasn't able to raise any money. But I still have an appetite, it's about can I do the job, can I make a difference in the city."
After his machine delivered a huge turnout for Elizabeth Warren in last year's Senate race, it's clear Menino remains a difference-maker in statewide political races. So we wondered if any candidates have contacted him about the special election that would be held if Senator Kerry is confirmed as Secretary of State.
"Ed Markey called me initially when he said he was gonna run, but I haven't heard from him since," said Menino.
Rep. Stephen Lynch, who is believed to be considering a run, has also contacted Menino.
"I've sat down with Stephen," said Menino. "I've worked with him in the past."
Menino says he has a better relationship with Lynch than he does with Markey.
Someone who Menino has never been all that close with is Gov. Deval Patrick. While he praised Patrick for having the "courage" to propose a major income tax increase, the mayor was skeptical of the outcome.
"Will it happen? I doubt it," says Menino. "But it's always that threat that's out there that you're gonna lose jobs in our state."
Menino says he feels better everyday as he continues daily rehab treatments to build up leg strength. But he has no problem flexing his political muscles. Asked if he sees anyone in the city capable of filling his shoes should he choose not to run again, Menino cited one name only: Angela Menino, his wife.
