Keller @ Large: Not An Apology
BOSTON (CBS) - I realize I'm late to get to this, but I cannot let the convicted Marathon mass-murderer's so-called "apology" pass without a few observations.
First of all, this was in no way an "apology," and should not have been characterized as such.
Yes, he did say, once, that "I'd like to apologize to the victims, to the survivors," but this was prefaced by the contention that "if you are not merciful to Allah's creation, Allah will not be merciful to you." So it's unclear if he's expressing regret for his killing spree or simply mouthing some words he thinks will set him up to receive Allah's mercy.
Actually, based on his actions before and after the murders, it is pretty clear.
Much has been made of this sociopath's statement that "I am sorry for the lives that I've taken, for the suffering that I've caused you, for the damage that I've done." To me, it sounds like the sort of "I'm sorry" you get when you chastise a naughty toddler.
What it really means is, I'm sorry I got caught.
And one more thing: "If there's any lingering doubt about that, let there be no more," he said in court. "I did do it along with my brother."
That sounds to me like direct refutation of the defense team's main contention, that the younger brother was dragooned into the slaughter by his demonic older brother. Did the lawyers knowingly lie about that even though their client was telling them it was false?
If they did, shouldn't there be discussion of disbarment?
One thing seems certain – after that performance, it's hard to believe any jihadists around the world will rally behind this pathetic specimen.
Hopefully that will speed the process of forgetting he ever existed.
