Keller @ Large: Marathon Bomber's Death Sentence Not A 'Blot' On Boston
BOSTON (CBS) - You knew it was coming after Friday's verdict – the second-guessing, and the recriminations from death penalty opponents.
Still, it was disappointing to see a great newspaper like the New York Times debase itself with Sunday's sad, gratuitous attempt to make the climax of this case about something it's not.
'"To many," they wrote, "the death sentence almost feels like a blot on the city's collective consciousness." As evidence, the Times quotes some clown who hasn't lived here in more than 40 years saying: "They ought to demonstrate a little humanity."
Age, it seems, doesn't always bring wisdom.
And with this front-page nonsense, the Times reveals that it doesn't know very much about us.
Yes, there are many people who preferred a life sentence for the killer, a solid majority according to the polls. I believe there are far fewer who would begrudge the jury its verdict, or see it as a blot on anything.
This killer was a sociopath, whose trial never offered any serious explanation for his homicidal rage against his fellow Bostonians, let alone any justification. He was given every opportunity to show his humanity to the jury, to reinforce the fake explanation for his behavior offered by his lawyers and the ventriloquist remorse act Sister Prejean tried to peddle.
He chose not to.
I see where the defense team is likely to make an appeals case that the jury got too emotional.
Maybe they've been spending too much time with their sociopath client and have forgotten that that's what humanity is.
