Keller @ Large: Clinton Vs. Trump - It's On
BOSTON (CBS) - What a moment in Brooklyn Tuesday night for America's foremost female politician, seizing the nomination that was denied to her eight years ago. "We all owe so much to those who came before and tonight belongs to all of you," she said to a cascade of cheers.
Hours earlier, Bernie Sanders was telling an interviewer: "There's nothing to concede. Sec. Clinton will not have the requisite number of delegates to win the Democratic nomination."
But she has won more votes, more pledged delegates, and more superdelegates. And while Sanders clings to the notion he can get those superdelegate party insiders to ditch Clinton for him, there's no precedent for that happening or evidence that it might.
Clinton made a point of congratulating Sanders and appealing for unity, and her biggest ally in that battle may be the Republican nominee.
Donald Trump also reached out to Sanders voters in his primary-night remarks, and to the relief of many of his backers, gave a scripted speech off a teleprompter that stuck to issues and Hillary-bashing. "The Clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves," he said.
And Clinton, who has already pivoted to the general election showdown with Trump, responded in kind.
"The stakes in this election are high and the choice is clear," she said. "Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commander in chief."
So here we go. Look for President Obama's endorsement of Clinton shortly (perhaps even followed by one from Sen. Elizabeth Warren?). And don't think Trump won't pounce on that.
"The last thing we need," he said last night, "is Hillary Clinton in the White House or an extension of the Obama disaster."
