Keller @ Large: Bush Ready To Go After Trump
BOSTON (CBS) - The Republican race for president has returned to New Hampshire and the war of words is heating up.
Jeb Bush is betting voters will eventually tire of Donald Trump's acid-rock campaign, and gravitate to his low-key emphasis on policy detail. In an interview with WBZ's Jon Keller, he made clear he's tired of being Trump's punching bag.
"I believe we have to have some degree of civility in order to solve problems," Bush said.
Keller sat down with the "Mr. Nice-Guy" of the race at a pivotal moment in his campaign, his poll numbers lagging as Donald Trump continues to attack, using profanity to mock Bush at a New Hampshire rally Wednesday night.
"Nice guys finish last, is that you?" Keller asked Bush.
"I'm going to be a candidate that will be tough and if people go after me and attack my integrity I'll fight back, don't worry about that," Bush said.
We may have seen a preview of coming attractions in the last GOP debate, when Bush aggressively slapped Trump's hand.
"That was just maybe a little frustration on my part that he has disrespected my family, and I'll just leave it at that," Bush said. "It was a little more than a high five."
But you're unlikely to see Bush hammer Trump when a needle is handy.
Keller asked Bush if he thinks Trump could be substantive.
"I don't know, it's hard to tell I think on foreign policy he needs a lot of work," Bush said.
"You can't just say I'm going to get my foreign policy by watching 'the shows' which I assume is the Sunday morning shows, maybe it's the Saturday morning shows, who knows?"
