Keller @ Large: Barney Frank Interim Senator? Doubtful
BOSTON (CBS) - Barney Frank for interim senator?
In politics, you never say never. But I doubt it.
Consider the precedent set by Gov. Deval Patrick's 2009 appointment of former Ted Kennedy aide Paul Kirk to serve until a successor to the late senator could be elected.
Kirk was a veteran Washington hand, and so is Frank, although Kirk had more direct Senate experience.
But that's where the similarities end.
Kirk is an affable, discreet figure whom Patrick could count on to never surprise or embarrass him with unexpected outbursts or high-profile posturing.
Barney Frank is... Barney Frank.
Plus, Frank has been a consistent, outspoken critic of our bloated military spending, calling for deep cuts and not demanding that defense-related industries in Massachusetts be exempt from them.
The Patrick administration's official position is to protect virtually all of our defense funding.
Frank notes in his public campaigning for the interim appointment that the next few months will be a critical time for spending-cut debates, with the military budget front and center.
Is Frank really who the governor wants defending that crucial economic lifeline in the Senate this winter and spring?
