Judge To Hear Request To Delay Whitey Bulger's Trial
BOSTON (AP) — A judge is expected to hear arguments from James "Whitey" Bulger's lawyer on his request to delay his trial for a year.
A status conference in Bulger's case is scheduled for Monday in U.S. District Court in Boston. Bulger's lawyer, J.W. Carney Jr., has requested a hearing on his motion to push back Bulger's trial from this November to November of 2013.
Carney says he needs more time to review more than 300,000 pages of documents as well as other evidence turned over by prosecutors.
Bulger, the 82-year-old former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, is accused of participating in 19 murders. He was apprehended last June in Santa Monica, Calif., after 16 years on the run.
Prosecutors are opposed to delaying the trial.
