Judge Weighs Whether To Release Documents In Whitey Bulger Case
BOSTON (CBS) - Whitey Bulger's defense team wants a judge to release thousands of documents to the public. Attorneys argued the case in Boston Federal Court Friday. At issue: whether the judge should lift a protective order on evidence prosecutors have against Bulger.
Defense lawyers say the order has made it difficult for them to weed through reams of evidence, and they haven't been able to run the information by consultants or others who may have insight into the background of the case.
"It is important that we talk to people from all walks of life so we develop the best defense we can," said defense attorney Hank Brennan.
Also in the courtroom, Steve Davis, who's sister is one of Bulger's 19 alleged murder victims.
"There's a ton of evidence here they haven't come out with," he said as he walked in.
His friend, Stephen Rakes, owned a liquor store Bulger allegedly took over at gunpoint during his gangster days. He wonders if the protective order is covering up any government corruption.
"If that's the case, let's open the door and let the chips fall where they may. We're here in front of the federal building here to protect and serve," Rakes said.

The decision is now in the hands Judge Marianne Bowler who's weighing the arguments. Both sides have agreed that all medical records and autopsy results should remain sealed.
