Joseph Lifts Revolution To 2-2 Draw With Rapids
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - Shalrie Joseph scored on a penalty kick in the 90th minute as the New England Revolution salvaged a 2-2 draw with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.
Benny Feilhaber scored in the 25th minute for New England (4-9-8), which kept Colorado frustrated most of the game.
"This game speaks volumes of the character of this team," said New England coach Steve Nicol said. "We're a man short and a goal down and we deserved the point at the end of the day."
Caleb Folan scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute to tie the score and Kosuke Kimura gave Colorado (7-6-10) the lead in the 82nd with a kick from midfield that bounced over the head of New England goalkeeper Matt Reis.
"This is our fourth game in 10 days you saw the way we came back we did tells you everything you need to know about our players," Nicol said.
The Rapids are 3-0-5 against the Revolution since last losing to New England in 2007. Colorado hasn't lost at home in the series since June 15, 2002, and is 6-0-4 over that span.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie on May 7.
Feilhaber's goal was the only shot the Revolution had in the first half. Kevin Alston made a long inbounds pass to Stephen McCarthy right in front of the crease. McCarthy sent a header back to Feilhaber in the slot, who ripped a shot just under the cross bar.
"I saw the space behind Mac and hoped the ball would find me," Feilhaber said. "Mac was able to get me the ball and I was there."
Colorado had two shots in the opening half, the first by Kimura in the second minute.
The Revolution double and triple teamed Sanna Nyassi to keep him in check. Nyassi broke free momentarily to get a shot off in the 30th minute only to have Reis deflect the shot past the right post.
Brian Mullan missed a wide open net that would have tied the game for the Rapids in the 44th minute.
New England had the game in control when the Rapids were awarded a penalty that Folan converted, sending a shot into the middle of the back netting past the spot vacated by Reis in the 65th minute.
New England defender Chris Tierney received a red card ejection after the call for disputing the penalty.
Playing a man short, the Revolution had a scoring chance in the 76th minute. Joseph had his shot from inside the box blocked before it reached Matt Pickens.
Then Kimura sent a harmless kick from midfielder that Reis came up to catch. Instead, the ball bounded high over Ries and into the goal to give Colorado a 2-1 lead.
"I see Omar (Cummings) and Caleb running and I just send the ball towards them," Kimura said. "I think Matt saw Caleb coming and he misjudged it."
But New England put pressure on the Colorado defense in the last three minutes. They were awarded a penalty kick and Joseph easily beat goalkeeper Pickens on the kick.
"It's frustrating," Colorado coach Gary Smith said. "Our game eclipsed a decent possessional performance and the lead."
