Jonny Gomes Shows Off Impressive Red Sox Tattoo Via Mike Napoli's Twitter Account
BOSTON (CBS) -- Jonny Gomes has been a member of the Red Sox for just one season, and he's only under contract for one more, but his experience with the Sox is now guaranteed to be a part of him forever.
The Sox' outfielder, who was a major driving force in changing the culture of the clubhouse coming off a disastrous 2012 season, spent some time in the tattoo parlor this offseason.
And the results were pretty impressive.
Mike Napoli, who signed a two-year deal to stay with the Sox during this offseason, tweeted a picture of Gomes' new ink.
The tattoo is a celebration of the Red Sox' championship season. A very-bearded Gomes is holding the World Series Trophy in one hand while flexing and showing off a '13 on his right arm. He's riding a duck boat with "World Champs" and "B Strong" on the side, as well as "1918" and "2013." The significance of those years, of course, is that the Sox won the World Series at home last October for the first time in 95 years.
On the back of the boat is an American flag, which isn't a surprise, given Gomes' many patriotic tattoos all over his body.
Gomes' numbers weren't eye-popping during the season and postseason, but in a strange phenomenon, the Red Sox went 10-1 in the playoffs when Gomes started and went 1-4 when he was on the bench. His biggest moment came in Game 4 of the World Series, when he was a last-minute replacement for an injured Shane Victorino. Gomes strode to the plate in the top of the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1, and he launched a Seth Maness offering high and deep over the left field fence, giving the Sox a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.
