Jones: John Farrell Likes Where Red Sox Are At Right Now
BOSTON (CBS) - If you've been watching this Red Sox team in 2015, perhaps you have a different feeling about them than the manager does.
98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones takes a look at some concerning postgame comments from manager John Farrell on the state of his team.
But first, some stats:
- Boston has received seven quality starts in their last 10 games
- In that same stretch, the Red Sox offense has been held to two runs or less six times. Seven quality starts, six occasions where they've scored two runs or less
- Boston is now 0-for-their-last-19 with the bases loaded
- The Red Sox are two games below .500 at 19-21
After 40 games, roughly the quarter pole of the Major League Baseball season, here's what John Farrell had to say following their latest loss Wednesday night (emphasis added is my own):
"It's been a little bit of an up-and-down [season]. Of late we are getting much more consistent pitching. You'd like to see, and I think we will see an offense that is certainly going to score more runs than we have over the last eight or 10 games. But I like where we are right now."
When pressed for a follow-up, Farrell expounded and said:
"We've got guys healthy. We've got [Shane Victorino] coming back to us, [Mike Napoli] seems to be finding his stroke. I recognize where we are through 40 games in terms of the overall record, but this is an offense that we still believe in and is very strong. In the last couple of nights we're leaving 24 men on base in two nights. It's capable of scoring a lot more runs, and I'm confident that we will."
Adam Jones acknowledges that Farrell kind of cleaned it up at the end, but he can't help but point to one sentence and shake his head.
"'I like where we are right now'? Holy smokes. I like where we are right now? Your team is 19-21, you're 0-for-your-last-19 with the bases loaded. The pitching has turned around a little bit -- just a little bit -- but on balance of the season the pitching has been atrocious," Jones said. "How can you say you like where you are right now?"
Do Red Sox fans "like where we are" right now? Jones doesn't see how anyone can think that way based on what we've seen.
"How can anyone with a straight face [say that]?" he asked.
