Johnson Calls Celebration Mocking Jets, Burress A 'Stupid Decision'
(AP/CBS) - Buffalo Bills receiver Stevie Johnson called his touchdown celebration that mocked the Jets and receiver Plaxico Burress "a stupid decision."
"I was just having fun and part of having fun ended up being a penalty and a touchdown for the Jets," Johnson said after the 28-24 loss. "It was a stupid decision by myself."
"I can't be doing that," he added. "I cost my team seven points. I feel I cost our team a win."
"One of the things today was a lack of discipline and we have got to get that straightened out," Buffalo head coach Chan Gailey said after the loss. "We need that kind of emotion without those glaring errors."
Johnson caught the 5-yard pass, got up and, in his short celebration, acted as if he shot himself. He then ran to the left side of the end zone mocking the "flight" celebration the Jets often use after scoring.
Burress served 20 months in prison for shooting himself in the leg in a nightclub in 2008 while he was with the Giants.
It was only when Johnson fell to the ground at the end of that second demonstration that he was penalized 15 yards for excessive celebration. That penalty was enforced on the kickoff and helped the Jets score a touchdown.
Burress was not too upset with Johnson's celebration after the win.
"I've seen worse, and I've heard worse," said Burress. "So, it doesn't bother me at all. The result I'm looking at is we won the football game."
