JFK's Bomber Jacket Sold For $665,500 At Amesbury Auction

AMESBURY (CBS/AP) - An Air Force One leather bomber jacket once worn by President John F. Kennedy was sold for $665,500 at an auction in Amesbury over the weekend.

The jacket was one of thousands of items that once belonged to Kennedy's assistant Dave Powers that were up for sale at John McInnis Auctioneers from 11 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.  It was reportedly expected to sell for $20,000 to $40,000.

Powers' copy of the presidential itinerary on the day Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas sold for $65,000.

The documents contain handwritten details of Kennedy's final hours, including the time he was shot, how Powers helped carry him in a stretcher to the operating room, the time of death and the aftermath.

An American flag that flew at the White House during the Kennedy administration went for $21,000, according to the Eagle-Tribune.

A signed wedding photo of Kennedy and his wife Jackie went for $9,750.

The items were from the private collection of Powers, who died in 1998. He was Kennedy's assistant and a close personal friend of the president and his wife, Jackie.

Powers also was the first curator of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston until he retired in 1994.

Powers joined Kennedy for his first political campaign for Congress in 1946 and was with him when he was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. He collected keepsakes and documents spanning his years of friendship with the Kennedy family.
