Jets Blown Out On 'Monday Night Football' As New York Tabloids Call For Todd Bowles' Head
By Matt Dolloff, CBS Boston
BOSTON (CBS) -- The New York Jets got blown out 41-10 by the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium, officially eliminating them from playoff contention. The Jets have averaged just 14 points per game during their recent four-game losing streak.
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck picked the Jets apart for most of the game, going 22-for-28 passing for 278 yards and four touchdowns. Colts wideout T.Y. Hilton caught nine passes for 146 yards as the Jets secondary struggled to cover down the field all night. On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was just 5-for-12 with 81 yards and an interception before the Jets turned to Bryce Petty, who was 11-for-25 passing with 135 yards and a touchdown.
The Jets' ugly all-around performance on their home field (and on national TV) now has all eyes on head coach Todd Bowles, who has his team at 3-9 after a surprising 10-6 season in his first year. Is this season's futility enough by itself to get Bowles fired after less than two years on the job? The New York tabloids apparently believe so ...
Jets owner Woody Johnson was reportedly not in the mood to speak to reporters after the game, which came just one week after the Patriots narrowly defeated the Jets 22-17 after a late rally by Tom Brady.
Calling for the team to fire the head coach one week after they gave the Patriots a relatively competitive matchup seems like a knee-jerk reaction to me, but that's just par for the course for the New York tabloids. Whatever happens from here on out for the Jets, who face the Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Christmas Eve, Monday night has to be rock-bottom. Can't imagine it getting any worse.
Either way, it's been a precipitous fall for a team that one year ago looked like the Patriots' most formidable competition in the AFC East. Until they get a competent quarterback - and maybe they need a more competent coach too - they won't have a shot.
