Jet Blue Soars Past 100 Daily Flights At Logan
BOSTON (CBS) - Thursday was a red-letter day for JetBlue and Logan International Airport.
It was the first time that the airline passed the 100 flight mark for outgoing and inbound Boston service. The airline currently flies to 42 destinations. Six years ago when JetBlue started its Logan service, it had just seven flights a day.
The next expansion for JetBlue will take place on May 4th when JetBlue starts four daily round-trips to Newark. The airline is having a one-day 50 percent off sale ending at midnight tonight for the new service. Flights must be completed by June 30th.
The airline that already flies to its headquarters hub at JFK Airport jumped into the Newark service to head-off low-cost carrier Southwest from doing the same thing. Southwest is also ramping up service at the Newark Airport. The major airline currently flying between the two destinations is Continental Airlines which is merging with United.
JetBlue has marketing agreements with Aer Lingus, American and Lufthansa on international flights coming into Logan Airport. It also works with regional carrier Cape Air to connect to its Boston service.
Boston ranks as the second major hub for JetBlue behind JFK Airport in New York.
JetBlue Vacations is also offering air and land packages to many of its destinations in the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean.
Massport is in the final stages of construction of a new consolidated security entrance in Terminal C to handle the expanding JetBlue flights. That new checkpoint is expected to open before the July 4th weekend.
JetBlue recently signed a new seven year deal to become the official airline of the Boston Red Sox and is also the official airline of the Boston Marathon.
The irony of all this is that when JetBlue first approached Massport about coming to Boston, the Authority suggested that the airline consider Worcester and not Logan. JetBlue will be number one in the passenger count in Boston flying about seven million people this year.
