Jerry Botto Retires From Belmont Barber Shop After 50 Years
BELMONT (CBS) -- Jerry Botto has been cutting hair in his Belmont barber shop for nearly 50 years, but now, Botto will lay his clippers to rest.
On the job since 1968, Botto is retiring and selling his business, Jerry's Barber Shop. At 73, Botto said he felt it was time to retire.
"Someone told me that I would know when it's time, and I feel that it's time for me," Botto told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Ben Parker.
Stepping away from the business he's loved all his life will be hard, Botto said.
"It is definitely, it's going to be different. I don't think someone can do something 50 years and not feel something," he said. "When one works 50 years in the same profession, they have to like it. They have to love what they do, and I do."
Botto is selling his business to veteran barber Fred Sacco. Though Botto is tapping out at age 73, Sacco hasn't yet gotten the retirement itch. He's 81.
Though Botto is stepping away from the business, he's not stepping away from the shop. He said he will go to Sacco for his haircuts.
"I have to keep an eye on him," Sacco said, "because after all, my name is still up there."
