Jenks Ready For New Role As Setup Man

BOSTON (CBS) - It's a sign of spring as Red Sox pitchers and catchers were due to report to the team's training facility in Fort Myers, Florida on Sunday.

One of the team's new acquisitions, reliever Bobby Jenks, is ready for a new challenge as one of Terry Francona's top setup men out of the bullpen this season.

"It's going to be different, obviously. It's going to be an adjustment that I have to make on the field. ... It's going to be an adjustment day-to-day and something I'll have to learn from quickly once the season starts and get myself adapted to that type of mindset this spring," Jenks told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Jonny Miller.

With the Chicago White Sox from 2005-2010, Jenks saved 174 games, made two American League All-Star teams and earned a World Series ring (2005).

"(Boston) is a place I've wanted to play for for a while. Once the opportunity came up, I had a chance to come here; I jumped right on it. There was no other reason than that. I had a few other opportunities to go close right away and keep doing what I was doing. But when they called, I jumped right on it," Jenks said.

Jenks said he knows his new role as setup man to the incumbent closer, Jonathan Papelbon.

"I didn't come here to step on anybody's toes. I know what my role is. Coming here, I mean we've been friends, shoot, for many years now. I don't think that's going to be any problem throughout the year at all," Jenks said.
