Missing Phillips Exeter Academy Student Found Safe In Hartford, Conn.
EXETER, New Hampshire (CBS) -- The Phillips Exeter Academy student who went missing has been found safe in Hartford, Connecticut.
Family members said Jed Breen, 17, took off from Exeter Hospital, where he had been treated for dehydration, around 5 p.m. Tuesday, and was found Wednesday afternoon, two states away.
"Jed has been returned to his family," Exeter Police chief William Shupe told reporters at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. "Hartford officials were able to bring him to a safe place where he's been reunited with his family."
It wasn't yet known how Breen got to Hartford. Police said there was no foul play suspected, that Breen was a runaway.
Breen's uncle told WBZ-TV that Jed, who is on the school's cross country team, passed out in a yard during a training run in a nearby town Tuesday.
That's when he was taken to the hospital--but Exeter Hospital said in a statement that he "bolted" from their emergency department.
"Staff and security attempted to follow and then immediately notified the police," the hospital said in a statement. "At no time did hospital staff believe the individual was a danger to himself or anyone in the area, nor was he considered a possible flight risk."
Exeter Police said he was last seen running from Gilman Street toward trails on the Phillips Exeter Academy campus.
State and Exeter Police, as well as family members and campus staff and security, searched near the campus for him during the day Wednesday.
Eventually, Chief Shupe said, Breen sent emails to his parents, and police were able to find his location by tracking an IP address.
"The IT piece of it is what turned out to be crucial," Shupe said.
Chief Shupe thanked his officers, State Police, school officials, and volunteers who helped search for Breen.
