La Canfora On Toucher & Rich: Revis Can Be Had For A Third Round Pick
BOSTON (CBS) - Darrelle Revis is considered by many to be the best cornerback in the league (yes, even better than you Richard Sherman), and he's also the most highly paid corner as well - by far.
Revis gets paid nearly $6 million more annually than the next highest player, and his $16 million cap charge, plus a new regime and scheme in Tampa Bay, could signal the end of his Bucs tenure.
Enter Mike Florio.
The ProFootballTalk.com writer published over the weekend that the Patriots and Broncos are trying to "shake Revis free" from Tampa Bay and a deal would have to be done soon because the Bucs owe Revis $1.5 million on March 13.
Not only that, but if Revis is on their roster come the 13th they'll owe the New York Jets a third round pick instead of a fourth round pick based on the draft pick compensation agreed upon in that trade.
The Patriots did not place the franchise tag on Aqib Talib, and Alfonzo Dennard is currently serving a 60-day jail sentence - so at the moment there appears to be a great need at cornerback.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports spoke with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich program to discuss the Revis situation, which he said "intrigues" the Patriots.
"I know Tampa has fielded calls from a number of teams, but the degree of intent they have and how far they're willing to go is hard to say right now," La Canfora said Wednesday morning. "What's it going to take? I don't think a ton to be honest with you. I don't think there's a team right now that would be running to give Revis $16 million a year. That market correction will limit what they can get in trades. Could they get a 3rd rounder, a 4th rounder for him? I think that's feasible. I don't think it would take a ton because of the situation with the contract."
La Canfora notes that Titans corner Alterraun Verner is the best free agent corner left on the market, followed by Vontae Davis then Aqib Talib. It's no slight to Talib because he's still an upper echelon player at the position, but given his injury history and off-field problems he's just one notch below.
Another player not receiving the Patriots franchise tag was slot receiver Julian Edelman.
According to La Canfora, Edelman "understands what he has with Tom Brady" and he wouldn't be surprised to see him resign with the Pats.
The Patriots have shown an ability over the years to adapt and evolve their offense to fit their personnel, so having "The Smurfs" package in their arsenal with Edelman and Danny Amendola on the team is another route they could go this offseason.
