2 Dead After Shooting In Jamaica Plain
BOSTON (CBS) – After two people were shot dead Friday night, Jamaica Plain residents shared their fears and disgust for the violence that continues to erupt on local streets.
"It's very violent all the time," one mother said. "It's really bad around here and bad to the point where people don't feel safe."
Police say two people died after a shooting Friday night around 10 p.m. outside the Heath Street housing development on Centre Street.
One man was in his 50s and the other was a college student in his 20s. Both were sent to the hospital but did not survive.
Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said after the shooting a crowd of onlookers "turned" on police and became angry.
"It was a little hectic at first," Evans said.
Just hours before the Friday night's shooting city officials hosted a summer strategy meeting to help keep neighborhoods safe.
And on Saturday speaking at playground dedication in Roxbury, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said neighbors need to come together and help police get criminals off the street.
"You can't do that they are trying to save lives. People need to be respectful of the police when they show up to something like that," Mayor Walsh said.
Liz Miranda of the Hawthorne Youth Community Center said more needs to be done to curb violence.
"It's not just about prevention, but increasing youth jobs and decreasing the access to legal guns," Miranda said.
Danielle Sommers of Boston called the double murder a "tragedy."
"It's a tragedy and it's unnecessary and people need opportunity and hope," she said.
