Police Looking For Vehicle Involved In Fatal Hit-And-Run On Cape
A man was killed and three other people were injured in a hit-and-run crash at the base of the Sagamore Bridge in Bourne on Thursday night.
The Cape Cod Times reports two of the injured, one of whom is a child, suffered life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened around 8:25 p.m. on the westbound side of Route 6.
Investigators say a dark colored pickup truck hit another pickup truck in the eastbound lane, sending the second truck head-on into a minivan travelling westbound.
The dark-colored pickup truck that initially hit the second truck took off from the scene, state police said.
State police said the vehicle fled the scene heading eastbound on Route 6. They believe the truck has minor to moderate damage to the left side of the vehicle's front-end or its left side. They're asking anyone with information on the crash to contact them.
The victim who suffered fatal injuries in the crash was the driver of a 2012 Chrysler Town & Country minivan that was a rental registered in New Jersey. The man was from Israel and was deceased at the scene, state police said. His name is not being released at this time.
Passengers in the minivan, including several juveniles, were also from Israel, state police said.
Another crash victim, 43-year-old Michael Furlong of Sandwich, who was driving the 2004 GMC Sierra pickup truck that was struck by the suspect pickup, was taken to South Shore Hospital with serious injuries, state police said.
His family issued a statement thanking everyone who has expressed thoughts and prayers for his recovery and indicating that he remains in critical condition.
A preliminary investigation indicates the suspect dark-colored pickup was merging onto Route 6 eastbound from the Scenic Highway when its left front or left side impacted the right front of the 2004 GMC Sierra driven by the Sandwich man, which was travelling east approaching the bridge, state police said. Evidence indicates the impact forced the Sierra across the median and into the westbound lanes. In the rightmost westbound lane, the Sierra impacted the front of the Chrysler minivan, which was coming off the bridge heading west.
The driver of the Sierra was ejected from his pickup truck in the crash, state police said.
The crash is under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the Cape and Islands State Police Detective Unit, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
