Iron Worker Critically Hurt In 40-Foot Fall At Logan Airport Construction Site
BOSTON (CBS) - A 53-year-old iron worker was critically hurt after he fell 40 feet to the ground at a construction site at Logan Airport Friday.
The man was on the third floor a new parking garage under construction next to the Hilton Hotel in the middle of the airport when something went wrong around 7:45 a.m.
State Police say a preliminary investigation indicates that an approximately 32-ton precast concrete panel fell to the ground while it was being hoisted and secured in place on the third level of the garage.
The worker had been trying to secure the panel when he fell, police say.
The man was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition, police say.
His name has not been made public.
Police said he is from Seymour, Connecticut.
The man is an employee of Blakeslee Prestressed Inc., a subcontractor on the parking garage project led by general contractor Turner Construction.
Construction on the $80 million project began in April and is expected to be finished later this year.
Seventy workers were on the site at the time of the accident.
The project site will be shut down while OSHA reviews the incident.
State Police and OSHA are investigating.
No other information is available at this point in the investigation.
