Irene Forces Several Towns To Postpone First Day Of Classes

MARLBOROUGH (CBS) - Widespread power outages are forcing several school districts to postpone the first day of classes.

Marlborough is among the towns that have decided to push the start of school to next week. Residents have been using one of the town's schools as a shelter, while power was only recently restored to another school.

"It's good for families like me who have to clean up. On the other hand I want my children to meet their teachers, get a feel for what the year brings for them," Higgins said.

The Department of Education was not able to provide an exact count on the number of schools that are postponing classes due to Irene but was able to confirm at least a half-dozen communities are pushing back their start dates.
