Irene Downs Trees, Causes Power Outages West Of Boston

WELLESLEY (CBS) - One of biggest issues with Tropical Storm Irene was the wind, which downed trees and knocked out power to several areas west of Boston Sunday night.

Many of the towns west of Boston remained in the dark Sunday night.

Large trees are down all over and some roads remain blocked off.

For those living inland, like in Worcester, the storm was just as unpleasant as it was on the coast, in some cases.

WBZ-TV's Ken MacLeod reports from Worcester:

Meanwhile in Wellesley, strong winds knocked down a huge 100-year-old maple tree.

Fortunately, the tree landed perfectly between two homes, which is especially good because both families were inside when it came down.

"I was sitting in my bay window and I felt the crunch, and looked up and it looked like slow motion coming down and then boom, there we were," said Gerry Hume, one of the homeowners.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.

"(The tree) came right out of its root, ripped up the concrete, and it landed in the one spot. Everyone is safe," said Martin Galligan, one of the homeowners. "We were very blessed."

No one was hurt, but there is still a lot of cleanup in store for Wellesley and so many other towns in the Metro-West area.
