Snow Buried Hydrants Delay Fire Fighting Efforts In Ipswich
IPSWICH (CBS) - A building close to the Ipswich fire station went up in flames early Tuesday morning, but firefighters were slowed down by several hydrants that were buried in snow banks.
They were called to a two-and-a-half story building on Central Street, across the street from the fire department, around 5:30 a.m.
The fire quickly reached three alarms. The building, which had a flooring company on the first floor and apartments upstairs, was destroyed.
One resident woke the other two people who were asleep inside. All three escaped safely.
The fire chief said several hydrants had to be dug out with front end loaders before they could be used.
There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
Central Street is closed between Linebrook Road and Market Street for the cleanup.
