Man 'Staggering' Across Expressway In Dorchester Hit, Killed By SUV

DORCHESTER (CBS) – A man was hit by an SUV and killed on the Southeast Expressway at the start of rush hour early Wednesday morning.

It happened on the northbound side of Interstate 93, north of Exit 15, around 5:15 a.m.

It's not clear yet why the man, who was later identified as 26-year-old Claudio Correia of Boston, was walking on the highway.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that State Police received several calls from motorists regarding a man who was reportedly staggering across Route 93 southbound in the area of Exit 16," State Police said in a statement.

"Trooper Ryan Ware located the man lying in the roadway on Route 93 northbound, north of Exit 15, and determined that the man had sustained serious injuries from being struck by a motor vehicle."

Correia died at the scene a short time later.

State Police said the man had been hit in the northbound lanes by a 2014 Subaru Forester. The driver, a 40-year-old man from Norton, was not hurt.

No charges have been filed at this point in the investigation.

The incident backed up traffic for most of the morning commute. The drive time from the Braintree split to Boston was more than two hours at one point.

State Police cleared the scene and opened all lanes of traffic around 7:45 a.m.
