'Ice Bucket Challenge' Donations Rise To $31.5 Million
BOSTON (CBS) - Ice Bucket Challenge donations are showing no signs of slowing down, with millions of dollars in contributions rolling in thanks to the viral fundraising campaign.
On Wednesday, the ALS Association announced that donations pushed past $31.5 million between July 29 and August 20.
For comparison, during the same time period last year, donations totaled $1.9 million.
The majority of the money raised this year for the ALS Association has come from 637,527 new donors.
When the ALS Association announced its fundraising figures on Tuesday, donations had risen to $22.9 million.
Participants in the Ice Bucket Challenge dump a bucket of water over their head and post video of the feat to social media. As a part of the challenge, a donation is made to ALS research and several other friends are asked to do the same to keep the movement going.
Former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who was diagnosed with ALS, helped get the viral fundraising campaign started earlier this summer.
