Travelers Happy To Escape Before Hurricane Matthew Hit Florida
BOSTON (CBS) - With Disney bags in hand, there were a lot smiles at Logan Airport. The smiles were on those happy to escape Hurricane Matthew descending on Florida.
The travelers were on one of the last flights out of Orlando. "Yes, so happy to be home," said Priya Wiley.
A group of nurses from Boston Children's Hospital attended a conference in Orlando. They were supposed to head home on Saturday.
"It was a little nerve-wracking," said Brittany Hughes. "Our head nurse called us into a huddle yesterday and was like, 'get out, safety is our number one priority.'"
"We spent the majority of the afternoon Tuesday trying to get our flights out," said Ashley Renaud.
For only the fourth time in history, Walt Disney World shut down, as did Universal and Sea World. It was a race to get out.
"I was pretty sad about that," said Jon Karametsopouos. The family cut their vacation short and skipped the parks altogether on Thursday.
"I was hoping to get out of there as soon as possible. I didn't know if they were going to turn us back," said Billy Karametsopouos.
The Wiley family called in reinforcements - grandma - to find an early flight home, so they could at least get in Epcot on Wednesday. Three different flights later they were on their way.
"The storm was moving so slowly that if we got stuck there I would be surprised if we could get out by Sunday," said Abe Wiley.
"I am very happy to land in Boston at 5:30, during the week, probably the only time," said Priya Wiley.
