Hundreds Run For Peace In Memory Of Martin Richard
BOSTON (CBS) - Several hundred runners ran a 5K in memory of Martin Richard. Many who attended wore shirts bearing his name or MR8, the organization founded in his memory.
Before the group took off from the Eire Pub in Dorchester, a prayer was said and a moment of silence was held.
Jose Calderon knows the Richard family. "Anything we can do to keep his memory alive. Anything we can do to help the family," said Calderon.
The second Boston Marathon bomb went off by the Richard family. Martin Richard, 8, was killed. His parents and two siblings were injured.
Wednesday night, Henry Richard was one of the first to finish the run in honor of his brother.
Many running are also running the marathon for MR8. The non-profit honors Martin's message of "No more hurting people" and it gives to athletic, educational and community causes that uphold that belief.
"I have four kids of my own and I love everything the foundation belies in and I wanted to do my part," said Kathy Mullen of Dorchester.
Experienced marathoner Jen McCutcheon joined the team this year. "I wanted to do something but I didn't know what," McCutcheon said. She said she found the 5K comforting. "Today is always a hard day."
Two years after the bombing, Bill Richard, Martin's father, also ran surrounded by hundreds of runners for peace.
"I hope it gives them some solace that they have several hundred shoulders to lean on as they move forward," said Calderon.
